Sometimes this is a hard lesson to learn.  Often we just have to move on, knowing that God has other plans.  Should we have been in the relationship to begin with?  Obviously, He placed those people in our lives for a reason.  We can only HOPE that we learned something....a lesson He was trying to teach us....often about ourselves!!!   One of my greatest lessons was to trust my instincts more....to listen to that "still small voice"!!!
