I've been thinking about Lot's wife this past week....and, as I started to study about her....I realized that the daughters probably needed to be mentioned, too!!!
This story can be found in Genesis 19.
This story can be found in Genesis 19.
Lot's wife, who isn't given a name in scripture, was probably from Sodom or Gomorrah, where Lot settled after he parted from Abraham, his uncle.
She bore Lot two daughters and she fled with them and Lot after being warned about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah because the cities were so sin-filled. The cities were then destroyed at God's command. As Lot and his wife and daughters were fleeing the city, Lot's wife disobeyed the command to not look back....and she immediately turned into a pillar of salt.
Something that was interesting....and very disturbing to me....was when the men came to Lot's home and demanded that the angels of the Lord be sent out so that they could have sex with them....that Lot offered his own virgin daughters to the men instead.
Since the daughters were left alone with their father....and were probably grieving, along with Lot, at the loss of their mother....they took matters into their own hands (big mistake)....and decided that the only way they would ever have children was if their own father got them pregnant. So....they got Lot drunk and slept with him, carrying out their plan.
The descendants of the sons they bore, Moab and Ammon, were enemies of God's chosen people, the Israelites.
Conclusions:
The disobedience of Lot's wife can serve as a an example for us today in a couple of different areas.
First of all....we are to obey God's commands....and when we don't, there are consequences that often affect those close to us. And, secondly....don't look back....don't dwell on what used to be, or on past mistakes. Just press forward and do the best we can right now...and in the future!!!
As for Lot's daughters....they can serve as an example of what sometimes happens when we take matters into our own hands!!!
Until next week!!!
In His Most Precious Love....and with mine!!!
Oh Deb, this story has always bothered me. I am always amazed that the Lord never sugar coated his people. Sometimes they shine..and sometimes..well they just plain stink! I guess if he decided to write about us it would be pretty embarassing-Lol! The sad truth is that I doubt the girls knew any better considering where Lot decided to take up residence. Wow..I'm sure he was filled with regret at that choice. This passage sure puts the fear of God into me. We moved 'out of Sodom' so to speak, just to keep our kids from getting so infected with materialism that they would no longer know what life is really supposed to be all about. Good lessons here!

ReplyDeleteYou would think we would learn from our mistakes but all too often we don't. Great reminder not to take things in our own hands... and not to look back... keep our eyes focused on Him.

ReplyDeleteImagine Lot's daughters children having to write a geneology report and learning that their dad was also their grandfather and that their mother was also their sister. (sic) I bet they had a rough childhood.
ReplyDeleteGenesis 19 does make for some interesting reading when a person is bored.
