The Ten Commandments

Let's talk about the Ten Commandments!!!
They can be found in Exodus 20:2-17.
...(NLT)
This is something I haven't really thought a lot about until recently. A few weeks ago, one of Pappy's brothers...my brother in law...came for a visit and we talked about scripture most of the time he was here...and the subject of the Ten Commandments came up.
Here they are...along with a few comments of my own!!!

1. You must not have any other god but me.
If you'll notice "god" in this commandment is spelled
with a little "g".
Examples of what other gods can be; food, sex, drugs, TV, Internet, alcohol, another person, gambling, our car, our home, our job. God demands our devotion and our all. He wants our worship and our praise, and doesn't want us to put more importance on anything other than Him!!!

2. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea.
This commandment goes hand in hand with #1.
We must not make anything....or anybody....into an idol.

3. You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
When we speak the name of God.....or say Jesus....it needs to be said with reverence and love. We are to never use God's name in anger, or in a vulgar way, or to use as a curse word.

4. Remember to observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
One way to keep the Sabbath day holy is by attending church and worshipping God with fellow believers. This is a day of rest for most of us....I love my Sunday afternoon nap. I'm going to say something right here that might be a tender spot for some...but I cannot stand to drive home from church on Sunday mornings and see people out mowing their yards. There are times when an emergency comes up that needs attending to on Sunday....but most of the time whatever it is can wait until Monday...or even after church on Sunday night!!!
Remember....even God took a day of rest when He created heaven and earth!!!

5. Honor your father and mother.
We honor our parents by showing them respect and love. This commandment isn't just meant for kids...which when I was a kid that's what I thought...but, as I've gotten older I realize that we never get too old to show respect and concern and compassion toward our parents.

6. You must not murder.
Human life is precious because it is given by God. Murder doesn't just mean killing another human with a gun, or a knife. It also means abortion and euthanasia. Just as in #5 where we are to honor our parents....we are to honor and respect each other, and never think we're better than another person. God loves us all...and we're to follow His guidance and love one another, as He first loved us!!!

7. You must not commit adultery.
So many times we hear that "we're not hurting anybody". How untrue is that statement. With adultery, it doesn't just affect the man and the woman....it also affects children, friends, family members. Plus, when this happens to Christians....then testimonies are killed, faith is hindered.

8. You must not steal.
Does stealing just mean breaking into someones home, or business, and taking their possessions??? Does it just mean robbing a bank??? Today, there are many ways to steal. Identity theft is a major concern in the world today. Also, stealing other's ideas. In the blogging world, this happens a lot. So many people write blogs and share their crafts, or organizing tips, or recipes...which is fine because they are sharing those ideas with the idea that it might be helpful to somebody else....but if we try to completely copy their ideas and their style....then, that is stealing. I used to work for a company and every fall the office supply cabinets would empty out...people would take pens and paper and pencils...for their children starting back to school. I never understood how they could do that keep a clear conscience!!!!

9. You must not testify falsely against your neighbor.
Don't tell lies about people...don't gossip...don't share rumors that you've heard with others. I've said this before....I really don't want to hear "bad" things about people, because that causes me to form an opinion...one that is more than likely totally wrong. Whatever that person was doing which caused the gossip to spread....they might have been going thru a rough time, had a lot going on in their life at the time. Let's all be careful to not talk about people, or listen to what others say!!!

10. You must not covet your neighbor’s house. You must not covet your neighbor’s wife, male or female servant, ox or donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbor.

Covet is a strong desire for what belongs to somebody else. This commandment, to me, also goes along with stealing. Sometimes the desire is so strong, that we steal from them, either a tangible item, or an idea. Coveting is a form of jealousy and can lead to breaking some of the other commandments, too.....stealing, adultery, disrespecting parents....taking God's name in vain.

Hope you enjoyed this little refresher of the Ten Commandments....I know I did!!
Sometimes it helps to go back and review and let the "old things" become new again!!!

In His Love...and with mine!!!

  1. Refreshers are always great. Matthew 5:28 states that even if we look with lust in the heart, which includes pornagraphy, that is adultery and 1 John 3:15 states to have hate in the heart, you have commited murder. Learned those from The Way of the Master class.

Hope this helps out with your refresher and we all need to refresh stuff we learn from time to time.
P.S. I didn't read your blog yesterday until I did mine for I felt you were doing it on love too, and I didn't want anyones idea, except God's. Amazing I knew that because of God!
